FGM (Female Genital Mutilation)
FGM used to be called female circumcision. It is used all over the world, and is done to prevent promiscuity. FGM is brutal and often carried out by very young children, earning a living, in very unhygienic situations. It is frequently carried out on young girls and babies. It can lead to death, life long problems, fistulas, no enjoyment of sex, as well as many psychological ones.
In the UK girls may be circumcised or taken abroad where the circumcision is carried out. It is illegal to do either of these, and although prosecution can follow it is very rare.
