Forced Marriage

Forced Marriage
Forced Marriage is not the same as Arranged Marriage. Arranged marriages will usually include the family deciding to unite with another family. The bride and groom will have the opportunity to meet and get to know each other. They will have a choice in the marriage.

Forced marriage involves taking a man or woman and forcing them to marry. It might involve taking someone away to another country or bringing someone in who has never been met before. Forced Marriage can be very dangerous – leading to rape, domestic violence and in some cases death, or other crimes of “honour”. Forced marriage is often linked to HBV (Honour Based Violence), and can include taking very young girls and marrying them off.

Forced Marriage is a criminal offence in England. Parents may face prosecution and if they are found guilty imprisonment.
